DESCRIPTION:Help Expand Bracken Preserve\nFinish Buying the Land and Start Building Trails!\nBrackenfest 2.0 is a “fun”draising ride to support the expansion of Bracken Preserve with 34 acres of beautiful forest land where we can build 2-3 miles of moderate trails. These trails will be inviting to more of our community—including athletes\, adventurers\, beginners\, children\, families\, seniors\, and people at various levels of ability and fitness. \nLast year\, we needed to act fast to buy the land while it was still for sale. In December 2022\, Conserving Carolina closed on the land\, but we still have a funding gap to cover the purchase\, so we can move on to the exciting part—building trails! \nLast year\, Brackenfest generated over $25\,000 in funding for the Bracken expansion. If we could match that success\, or do even better this year\, it would be a huge step toward creating these new trails for walking\, running\, hiking\, and biking. \nThere are two ways to participate in Brackenfest. You can raise funds by riding as many laps as possible—solo or as a relay—in three hours. Or join the guided ride at a relaxed pace. \nREGISTER HERE! \n  \nOption 1: How Many Laps Can You Ride in 3 Hours?\n\n8:30 to 11:30 AM\nRegistration costs $75 for adults\, $50 for college students\, or $25 for youth.\nParticipants are asked to personally fundraise with pledges from family\, friends\, employers\, and more.\nPrizes will be awarded to the winners in each category.\nRegistration price includes lunch at 185 King St.\nPackets for donation collections are provided after registration.\nRide Solo or as a Team Relay\n\nOption 2: Guided Slow Ride\n\n9:00 to 11:00 AM\nSingle lap\n$15 to register.\nRegistration price includes lunch at 185 King Street.\nParticipants are asked to personally fundraise with pledges from family\, friends\, employers\, and more.\nRelaxing no-drop pace.\nTour trails with stops to learn about plants and animals in the preserve.\n\nSign up for this event on Bikereg.com \nIf you are interested in volunteering or for more details\, please contact Howie Granat – Parks\, Recreation & Trails: hgranat@comporium.net or 508-951-2908 \nThis event is run by the City of Brevard\, which owns and manages Bracken Preserve. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Nature and Forest Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing at Transfiguration Preserve. This walk will provide time to enjoy a 3 hour experience in the forest as we discover what the changing season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nSpace is limited to 12 participants. Registration is required by RSVP below. RSVP will close at 12:00 p.m. on September 21st.  \n*Transfiguration Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \nDonations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. A donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. DESCRIPTION:Date: September 23\, 2023 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat – in the orchard \nSpeaker: Steve O’Neil\, executive director of Earthshine Nature Programs \nIn this program\, Steve will be bringing several working examples of his favorite form of renewable energy – solar power.  He will explain how they work and even let you explore them in a hands-on show and tell.  Steve will also bring the SS NaSA PoD\, with its 1780-watt rooftop solar array\, as the centerpiece. \nSteve is from Hendersonville\, North Carolina and has worked as an interpretive naturalist for many years and with many organizations. Currently\, he is a naturalist and environmental science educator with Trails Carolina and he is the Executive Director of Earthshine Nature Programs. He received is Associate of Applied Science in Wildlife & Fisheries Management from Haywood Community College and his Bachelor of Science in Recreation Mgt./Outdoor Experiential Education from Appalachian State University\, and he loves to share his passion for forests\, mountains\, caves\, swamps\, and dunes – in search of all things and all places wild and wonderful – with youngsters and adults. \nGuests will park in the orchard at Laughing Waters Retreat\, accessed from the address below\, and walk up a little hill and gravel driveway to the pavilion.  If anyone has mobility challenges\, there is the opportunity to be dropped off closer to the pavilion. \nFor more information about Laughing Waters Retreat Center\, visit laughingwatersnc.com.
