Susan was born in Polk County and raised at the base of White Oak Mountain in Columbus, NC.  She received a BA in Sociology and Education from Wake Forest University, a MAT in Special Education from Converse College, and an EdS in Educational Administration. Though starting her career in Spartanburg, SC, her 31 year career was spent primarily with the Polk County, NC School System, where she retired as School Superintendent in 2004.  Since that time, she has served on several non-profit Boards, including St. Luke’s Hospital, Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry, and the Stuart and Margaret Forbes Foundation.

Susan and her husband, Tom, live in a neighborhood in Saluda, which is surrounded by NC Gamelands and close to the Green River.  A deep respect and appreciation for the beauty of this unique area of western North Carolina has caused her to actively participate in efforts to protect and preserve our natural lands and resources. She is an avid hiker on land surrounding her home and elsewhere throughout western NC.
