Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. DESCRIPTION:Nature Preserve Stewards\n  \n  \nMeeting Place: Cedar Mountain Community Center\, 10635 Greenville Hwy\, Cedar Mountain\, NC 28718. We will carpool to the Little River Wetlands from there.  After our work is done\, please join us for for coffee and comradery(optional) at the Cedar Mountain Outpost. \nJoin us for our weekly Nature Preserve Stewards workday. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Little River Wetlands – This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. An email with details of the workday\, including meeting place\, will be sent to all who have registered by Friday of the preceding week.\nIn the case of a month with five Wednesdays\, we will not have a formal workday.  Volunteers are encouraged to visit and monitor any of the sites we’ve worked in together in the past.  Please update our projects in iNaturalist (contact Torry@conservingcarolina.org for details) with any interesting observations.  You can log your time spent by emailing mary@conservingcarolina.org.\n\n\n\nWhat to expect:\nA typical day might include: \n\nPulling weeds\nErosion control\nPlanting and tending trees and other plants\nMaking and recording scientific observations\nCreating habitat for all kinds of animals\nMaintaining artificial habitats (bird and bat boxes\, etc.)\nOther tasks as conditions warrant.\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\nAppropriate clothing for four hours in nature: close-toed shoes\, long pants\, and shirt sleeves. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants and gardening?  Join us Thursdays from 9 am –  11am at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler in October we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:Where: Raven Cliff Falls \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.9–miles\, moderate; trail type-out and back \nElevation gain: 738′ \nApproximately 40 minute drive \n**There is a State Park trail access fee of $3 per adult\, but if you’re a SC senior\, the fee if $1.50. PLEASE BRING CASH IN THE EXACT AMOUNT for yourself on the day of the hike. \nJoin us for a scenic hike to Raven Cliff Falls\, one of the Upstate’s most spectacular waterfalls! We’ll wind through a beautiful forest in the Matthews Creek watershed\, enjoying lush vegetation\, mountain views\, and the sights and sounds of the surrounding forest before reaching a viewing platform to see the falls. Raven Cliff Falls plunges an estimated 420 feet from Raven Cliff Mountain along the Blue Ridge Escarpment\, where the Blue Ridge Mountains drop dramatically toward the Piedmont below. Named for the ravens that nest in the high cliffs around the falls\, Raven Cliff Falls is one of South Carolina’s most scenic waterfalls! Come explore this popular trail and experience the beauty of the Southern Appalachians along the way! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, September 4\, 2026.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:15 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area sometime in the afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 7:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ to see if the hike will take place. Trade St.\, Tryon\, NC 28782 \nJoin us for a free community movie night – a collaboration of Conserving Carolina\, The Gardening For Life Project\, and the Congregational Church\, UCC in Tryon. \nFantastic Fungi is a descriptive time-lapse journey about the magical\, mysterious and medicinal world of fungi and their power to heal\, sustain and contribute to the regeneration of life on Earth that began 3.5 billion years ago. \nThis documentary takes viewers into the hidden world of fungi through stunning time-lapse photography\, interviews with mycologists\, ecologists\, physicians\, and other experts\, and exploration of the remarkable networks of fungal mycelium beneath our feet. The film looks at fungi’s roles in ecosystems\, their relationships with plants\, their potential applications in medicine and environmental restoration\, and the ways fungi can help us rethink our relationship with the natural world. \nOne of the film’s biggest strengths is making the invisible visible. Much of a fungus exists as microscopic or threadlike mycelium underground or within decaying material; the mushroom is simply the reproductive structure that we happen to notice. The film uses beautiful time-lapse imagery to reveal this hidden world and encourage viewers to think about forests and soils as interconnected living systems. \nWhy are fungi so important? \n1. They are nature’s recyclers.Fungi are among the most important decomposers on Earth. They break down dead plants\, wood\, leaves\, and other organic material\, releasing nutrients such as carbon\, nitrogen\, and phosphorus back into ecosystems where they can be used again. Fungi are particularly good at breaking down tough compounds such as cellulose and lignin. \n2. They help plants get what they need.Many plants form partnerships with fungi called mycorrhizae. Fungal threads extend far beyond plant roots and can help plants obtain water and nutrients from the soil. In return\, the plant provides the fungus with sugars produced through photosynthesis. An estimated 80–90% of plant species have mycorrhizal partners. \n3. They are fundamental to healthy forests.Fungal networks are an important part of the soil food web and influence nutrient cycling\, plant productivity\, decomposition\, and carbon storage. Recent research continues to demonstrate just how important fungal communities are to the functioning of forest and soil ecosystems. \n4. They connect plants and ecosystems.Mycorrhizal fungi create extensive networks of hyphae throughout soil. These networks can connect plants and facilitate the movement of nutrients and carbon. Fantastic Fungi emphasizes this interconnectedness\, including the work of forest ecologist Suzanne Simard on relationships among trees and fungal networks. \n5. They influence the carbon cycle.Fungi both decompose organic matter and contribute to the formation and storage of organic carbon in soils. Their activity can therefore influence how carbon moves between living organisms\, soil\, and the atmosphere. \n6. They support wildlife.Fungi aren’t just important to plants. They are food for insects\, other invertebrates\, mammals\, and microorganisms\, making them an important part of food webs. \n7. They have enormous importance to humans.Fungi provide us with food\, fermentation\, medicines\, and compounds that have inspired medical research. The film explores the potential of fungi in medicine and human health\, although some of the film’s more forward-looking claims are best viewed as areas of research rather than established treatments. \n8. They may help us address environmental problems.Researchers are investigating fungi for applications such as breaking down pollutants\, restoring degraded environments\, and developing sustainable materials.
